Building a house on a block of land

Hey guys,

I'm curious as to if its a good idea to choose and buy my own land and then look into building a house on it, or just go for a house and land package?



Also would it be possible to build a new house under $200,000? Not including land of course.



I'm new to this whole real estate thing.
